These Two Functions Are Not the Same

The terms “memory module,” “start-stop eliminator,” and “start-stop disabler” are often used interchangeably.

However, the actual product behavior may differ significantly.

A customer should understand whether a product:

  • Remembers the previous setting;
  • Automatically presses the OFF command after startup;
  • Changes a software setting;
  • Disables the function completely;
  • Removes the driver’s ability to reactivate the system.

These are different technical approaches.

What Is a Start-Stop Memory Module?

A memory module normally restores the driver’s previous selection after the vehicle restarts.

For example:

  1. The driver turns the start-stop system off;
  2. The vehicle is shut down;
  3. The vehicle is restarted;
  4. The module restores the OFF setting.

The factory button usually remains functional.

The driver can still turn the system back on when desired.

What Is an Automatic Command Module?

Some products do not store the previous state.

Instead, they send an electronic command after every vehicle startup that performs the same function as pressing the factory OFF button.

From the driver’s perspective, the result may appear similar. However, the technical behavior is different from true memory.

What Does Permanent Disablement Mean?

Permanent disablement generally means the start-stop function is no longer available during normal vehicle operation.

This may involve:

  • Software coding;
  • Control-module programming;
  • Hardware modification;
  • Circuit modification;
  • Removal of the factory control function.

Permanent modification can be harder to reverse and may create additional diagnostic or service considerations.

Why Product Descriptions Must Be Accurate

A product should not be described as “permanently disabling” start-stop when it only restores a preference or sends an automatic button command.

Inaccurate descriptions may lead customers to expect that:

  • The system has been deleted;
  • The setting cannot be changed;
  • The function will never reactivate;
  • The product modifies vehicle software.

A clear description should explain exactly what happens after startup.

Which Option Is More Practical?

For many drivers, a reversible memory or automatic-command module is more practical because it:

  • Uses the original button logic;
  • Preserves manual control;
  • Avoids permanent wiring changes;
  • Can usually be removed;
  • Allows the vehicle to return to factory configuration.

The correct choice depends on the vehicle, product design, and customer preference.

Questions to Ask Before Purchasing

Ask the seller:

  • Does the product remember the previous setting?
  • Does it automatically send an OFF command?
  • Can the factory button still be used?
  • Can the system be turned back on?
  • Does the product require coding?
  • Is the installation reversible?
  • Does it cut or modify factory wiring?

[Brand Name] product pages should answer these questions clearly.
